Tues 19th

We are planning to travel on the Carlisle – Settle Railway to and from Appleby and Kirkby Stephen. This involves a walk of about 2 miles from K.S. station to the church and back, or slightly more if we take a more scenic walk avoiding the main road. Not going to Appleby (ringing there is uncertain – see below) would give more time for this walk. The bus offers an alternative way of getting from Appleby to Kirkby Stephen without the walk, but it cuts in to the (possible) Appleby ringing time.

Train & bus times:

Train 1: Leave Settle 09.50, (arr Kirkby Stephen 10.40), arr. Appleby 10.48

Bus 563: Leave Appleby 11.40, arr. Brough 12.00; Bus 564: Leave Brough 12.05, arr K.S. 12.11

Train 2: Leave Appleby 12.36, arr. K.S. 12.48

Train 1a (alternative) Leave Settle 11.46, arr. K.S. 12.30

Train 3 (return) Leave K.S. 17.17, arr. Settle 18.01

11.00 – 11.45

St Lawrence
Appleby

Looks unlikely due to work on organ, but still a possibility if we go on the off-chance. There is a bit of a walk from the station to the tower – I may not have allowed quite long enough for this!

Kirkby Stephen

Confirmed

The Parish Church of Kirkby Stephen, known locally as the Cathedral of the Dales is built on the site on an old Saxon church and contains many ancient relics. At the west end of the Church, among several other ancient remnants, is the 'Loki Stone' - a block of stone about a metre in height, decorated by a carved figure with horns. This is historically important, as one of the few physical survivals from the time when the Vikings settled parts of this area.

Campsite details

We are staying at Knight Stainforth Hall Camping and Caravan Park

Costs and booking arrangements

I have reserved the “top field” for a large group of 20 – 30, with 6 hook ups needed, in my name, and I have also mentioned that we are Hexham Abbey ringers. The guy I have spoken to is called Chris Maudsley, and he has not asked for the names of everyone in the group, as some other campsites have. I haven’t asked him when he wants the money, but it would be easier for me if people paid individually, and informed the site of the number of nights they will be camping. The charge they are making, which is a reduction on their normal rates is:

£3.00 per person per night (whether you are in a tent or a caravan, and with no charge for cars)

£2.00 per night for electricity

Route to campsite / map

Heading south along A65, turn off left on to B6480, towards Settle. After about 1.5 miles, just before crossing the River Ribble and entering the town of Settle, turn left on to the unclassified road to Little Stainforth. (You will probably see a lot of this road in the course of the week!) On entering Little Stainforth, turn right down the small road that leads to Stainforth. The campsite buildings (shop, games room, etc) are on your left in a courtyard, and the campsite itself is down a road with a barrier on your right a little below this. Just before the road with the barrier into the campsite, there is a field gate on the right into the field we are camping in (the “top field”). You should probably check in at the buildings on your left on arrival.

ON-SITE FACILITIES

·         50 caravan pitches with electric hook-ups and 50 pitches for tents/motor caravans

·         Toilet block with flush toilets, hot and cold wash basins and hot air hand dryers

·         Shower Block with 8 individual cubicles and pot washing facility

·         Battery charging services

·         Freezer facility for cool blocks

·         Public telephone

·         Shop

·         Games/TV room

·         Childrens' Playground

·         Salmon and trout fishing can be arranged from reception

Tower fees and trip expenses

I am proposing to leave £10.00 at each tower (except the two service rings), and am planning to charge everyone on the trip 60p per tower for the number of towers they could ring at while they are with us. I have estimated that 60p per tower per person should bring in enough, based on when I expect people to be on the trip (I have made some guesses).

If you join the trip on Saturday and leave the following Saturday, 19 towers will be available, so the charge will be £11.40.

If you join first thing on Wednesday and leave last thing on Thursday, then 7 towers would be available, so the charge would be £4.20. I hope you feel this is fair. I would like to avoid collecting money at towers, or trying to monitor who has rung where.
